The Serviceable Mask
Offering the people you work and live with a clear, trustworthy role, and taking the mask off when the work is done.
Why we practice this
In Chapter 5 of our book, a clear professional or household role is compared to the brushed-aluminum faceplate on an oscilloscope (Plate XIV). A good faceplate does not pretend to be the whole complex circuitry inside the casing, and it does not lie about the voltage; it simply gives the other person clean, legible markings they can rely on. We practice the Serviceable Mask when we make our promises readable to others without mistaking our job title for our soul.
How to begin
- Name one role you will step into today: colleague, parent, neighbor, nurse, teacher, or host.
- Before an interaction or in a message you need to send, state clearly what the other person actually needs to know from you: what you can do, when you will do it, and what you cannot yet promise.
- Read your words once and cross out any sentence that is only there to perform how busy, indispensably clever, or spiritually deep you are.
- Offer the clear words and do the work.
- When the work hour ends, take the faceplate off. You do not owe your employer your whole inner life, and you do not owe your family the performance of never being tired.
When sitting is not what you need
Edit one real email, handoff note, or household plan so the next person can act on it without having to guess your mood.
A question to sit with
Where in your week are you hiding behind vagueness to seem agreeable, and where are you wearing a role long after you have come home?
Knowing when you are done
One clear communication, offered in good faith, completes the practice.
